our go-to grain-free cereal
Weekday mornings are often a time for routine.
Better to wake-up, engage in the habits that serve us without too much thought or pontification, and roll into the day with a fresh and healthy start.
(Yes, weekends are a different story!)
The ideal breakfast recipe is easy to make and gives you the get-up-and-go you need each morning. And hey, routine doesn’t have to be a bore. You should look forward to your morning bowl each day!
Here at the Functional Nutrition Alliance (FxNA), we sometimes start our team meetings by sharing what we had for breakfast.
(We are that nerdy about food but really, it’s just fun to hear what tickles everyone’s taste buds for their morning meal and it’s always good for a laugh or two!)
Today, I’ve asked a FxNA team member, Kelly Wilkins, our registrar (who truly helps to keep things running “behind the scenes”) to share one of her favorite breakfast bowls. It’s a recipe straight from one of our seasonal cleanses. And it’s one that Kelly continues to enjoy even when the cleanse is long over.
Here’s a hello from Kelly (in her own words… )
Hi! I’m the Registrar at FxNA and a member of the Operations team. I support operational functions such as program registration, payroll, finance, and much more! I truly value the ability to utilize my strengths to support Andrea and our whole team as we move this incredible mission forward. Even though I’m often working behind the scenes, I treasure the interactions I have with our students and clients. I love hearing about their personal experiences and passion to make a difference in the world and to improve their own health.
Kelly’s recipe pick and why she loves it!
Back in the spring, I participated in our seasonal liver cleanse. The Warming Grain Free Breakfast Cereal that’s featured in that cleanse was a great surprise the first time I tried it.
I didn’t expect that a little bit of hot water would quickly transform the ingredients into a yummy, warm, and filling porridge. It fills my desire for a warm cereal in the morning and I love knowing that the “cereal” is providing great nutrients and benefits to my body. The added bonus is that it’s easy to make. Throw a few ingredients in the food processor, then add hot water and a couple of toppings and you’re done. I enjoyed it so much that it’s now part of my regular breakfast routine.
Warming Grain Free Breakfast Cereal
- 1 tablespoon ground flax
- 1 tablespoon pumpkin seeds
- 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
- 2 teaspoons chia seeds
- 1⁄4 teaspoon cinnamon
- pinch of sea salt
- 1 vanilla bean, seeded (optional)
- 7 drops liquid stevia (vanilla crème or plain) or 1⁄2 – 1 teaspoon raw honey (or any other sweetener you desire)
- 1⁄2 bosc pear chopped or other seasonal fruit
- 1 tablespoon goji berries
- coconut milk
Grind flax seed into a fine meal and set aside (I usually grind about a cup and then just have it stored in the refrigerator for later). Using a hand blender like the magic bullet, a Vitamix dry blade, or a food processor, process pumpkin seeds, coconut, chia, cinnamon, sea salt, and vanilla until finely ground. Add hot water to cover along with stevia or honey and ground flax. Mix well. Top with fruit, berries and a drizzle of coconut milk.
